Description
The Silicon Valley USPTO is hosting a free workshop designed by educators for educators to help teachers/makers learn about STEM education and its significance to intellectual property (IP) and innovation. The 3-hour program agenda developed by the USPTO Office of Outreach and Education includes:
- Intellectual Property -- Basic principles of patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets
- Science of Innovation Curriculum --Connecting IP, Innovation, and STEM in the Classroom/Makerspace
- IP & STEM Activities for Students -- Inspire student creative thinking & problem solving
- Innovation Challenge for Teachers and Students -- A pedagogical model for IP-STEM Education
Sessions cover a broad range of topics in IP and provide project-based learning tools to further inspire resources and search tools to help students gain experience in the the creative process of invention while learning about STEM. The Science of Innovation curriculum, a collaborative project of the USPTO and National Science Foundation, features an 11-part video series produced by NBC Learn and includes specially designed lesson plans and student activities as well as innovators from across the country in industries as diverse as healthcare, energy, advanced manufacturing, transportation, and agriculture. The program aims for the following learning outcomes:
- Apply the principles of IP and innovation to help further motivate and engage students in authentic project-based learnin in STEM.
- Experience how innovators invent new things, improve upon old ones, and apply the creative design and engineering process.
- Implement Science of Innovation in the classroom.
- Encourage student inquiry using a strategy modeled on the research-based science writing heuristic to help you meet next generation standards in science and engineering.
- Become part of a national network of education professionals at the cutting edge of integrating IP, innovation, and STEM into the K-20 education curricula.
Please note that the Silicon Valley USPTO is a federal facility. Attendees are required to present a valid form of government-issued identification (driver license or passport) and may be subject to screening to gain access.
