Confucianism in the Age of Globalizatio: 2017-2018 Workshop Series

The Confucius Institute at UMass Boston and the Boston University Confucian Association are proud to announce our 2017-2018 workshop series on contemporary topics in Confucianism and Chinese Culture. The series will consist of one workshop during the Fall semester, and two workshops during the Spring semester.

Workshop 1:

Confucian Education in a Global Context

This workshop will introduce how Confucianism functions in self-cultivating and how Confucian values have been influencing people in China and in the world. The panel discussion followed will bring audience a rich looking and interpretation of Confucianism and Confucian values from different perspectives.

Keynote Speaker:

Prof. Jing Lin – University of Maryland

Confucianism and Education: From Personal Self-Cultivation to Social Transformation

Prof. Jing Lin is a professor of international education policy at University of Maryland, College Park. She has published extensively on the topic of Confucian Education and Confucian self-cultivation. She received her doctoral degree from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1990.

Prof. Min Chen – Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Prof. Min Chen, discoverer of the J-Particle which establishes the quarks as the fundamental building block of the Universe and the gluons which hold the positively charged protons inside a nucleus together, is a world authority in experimental Particle Physics. He is dedicated to the goal of integrating the sciences and humanities and has been instrumental in providing innovative and modern interpretations of Confucius’ thoughts in light of scientific knowledge.
