About this event
- Event lasts 3 hours
Each Composition in the Field class begins with a talk with one of our experienced instructors, and then you and your fellow students take a stroll through one of a variety of photogenic locales (in any of the 20+ cities the DPA encapsulates). There is street photography, magnificent interiors, farmers markets, zoos, landscapes, and more, photos of which are included within. These photos are a mix of student and instructor images in many different venues and cities across the United States and Canada.
You will have fun in the three hour session, learn to shoot strategically, get more interesting photos of the event, and walk away with a foundation to improve your photographs in the future, whether you’re traveling, or at a birthday party and everywhere in between.
Venue Description:
Nestled along the banks of the majestic Hudson River, Hudson captivates with its blend of historical charm and contemporary vibrancy. Located approximately 120 miles north of New York City, this picturesque city boasts a rich tapestry of 18th-century architecture and a thriving arts community. Your Digital Photo Academy instructor will lead you to endless photo ops and offer suggestions on composition strategies that yield portfolio worthy images.
Downtown Hudson is a treasure trove of diverse streetscapes, with Warren Street standing out as the epitome of visual delight and bustling activity. Explore the historic district using the “Leading Lines” technique, utilizing the cobblestone streets to guide the viewer’s eye towards key focal points such as art galleries, music venues, and culinary hotspots, adding depth and interest to your photographs.
Explore beyond the city center, and you’ll find hidden gems like a nearby antique fishing village nestled along the shores of the Hudson. A short walk from Warren Street, this charming locale provides a different perspective, offering a wealth of photographic opportunities.
Directly across from the Amtrak Train Station stands the iconic Hudson – Athens Lighthouse, a captivating landmark that adds a touch of maritime charm to the cityscape. Use “Rule of Thirds” to compose visually balanced shots, placing the lighthouse strategically within the frame to create a sense of harmony. Or, experiment with “Reflections” in the water to capture the transformative nature of the Hudson waterfront.
Venture just south of town, and you’ll discover a once-active mill with a captivating waterfall and scenic views downstream of Route 23. This historical site serves as a rich backdrop for capturing the intersection of industry and nature, preserving the beauty of a bygone era.
