About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

Come screenprint your own garment with FREEDOM TIME graphics alongside youth from Assembly, Recess’ diversion-to-arts program for court-involved young people. Learn basic screenprinting techniques and take home something you made!

Bring a t-shirt, tote bag, or any item you’d like to print on. Sip some Freedom Time tea, read in our abolition library, and witness the creative process behind FREEDOM TIME: undanced dances through prison walls.

FREEDOM TIME is a collective choreographic project from the artist collective Dancing Through Prison Walls, created in collaboration with incarcerated dancers, writers, and artists across the U.S. and beyond. The project reimagines movement, resistance, and connection across prison walls—and is presented as part of Session, Recess’ artist-led residency program that transforms our space into a site for process-based, socially engaged artmaking.

All ages and experience levels welcome.

About the Artists

Dancing Through Prison Walls is a California-based dance and performance project whose mission is to dance with, choreograph with, and tell stories within embodied carceral landscapes and beyond, amplifying voices of incarcerated people, and addressing mass incarceration. Begun in 2016, the work embraces a porous community of incarcerated, formerly incarcerated, and “free world” dancers, choreographers, visual artists, and performers. The resulting hours of dance, dance making, performance, film creation, writing, and community conversations comprise a body of work that is at its essence a critical dialogue about freedom, confinement, and ways for surviving restriction, limitations, and denial of liberty through the act of dancing. Moving towards our North Star goal of decarceration and abolition, we dance through prison walls.
