In our tech savvy world, we are constantly inundated with news and ideas at an ever increasing rate. Trends change with the speed of light, more content is created than ever before, and attention spans grow ever shorter. So, with only a few minutes to impress - how can you inspire and connect with an audience?

In this unprecedented age, the art of communicating effectively is more important than ever. Deepa Purohit, Founder and CEO of Finding Your Authentic Voice, Inc., will share how an effective narrative can help you cut through all the noise and make meaningful connections. Whether you are interviewing for a job, expressing your beliefs, or pitching a business proposal - speaking from a place of authenticity is the key to inspiring others. During this interactive workshop, you will learn how to cultivate a message that is authentic, impactful, and customized for your target audience.

Students will:

Engage in a writing exercise and practice speaking from unique aspects of your own voice (passions, beliefs, values, habits, blockers).
Explore tools and techniques to develop a story about yourself, in your own voice
Learn to tailor your content to different audiences.
Understand the role listening plays in communication.
Explore how breath, body, imagery and story are central to communicating effectively with audiences.

About the speaker:

Deepa Purohit is the Founder and CEO of her consulting company, Finding Your Authentic Voice, Inc. and the Director of Voice and Speech Coaching at Teach For America, an education non-profit. She uses her extensive training as an actor, writer and producer in the theater combined with her ongoing work in education reform to coach leaders who work on behalf children and families living in low-income communities on how to use storytelling and public speaking techniques to inspire people to take action and make change in their communities.

She is a 1992 Teach For America alumna and taught 6th and 8th grade English for 3 years in Baltimore City Public Schools. She has lived in New York for 18 years and taught writing and theater to students of all ages living in low-income communities across the city of New York both in school and for after-school programs. She received her BA from Northwestern University and a Masters in Public Health from Columbia University.

Deepa is also the Co-founder of Rising Circle Theater Collective, a theater company dedicated to developing and producing the unheard stories of people of color on the American stage. As the Artistic Director and Board Member of her theater company for 12 years, she oversaw the development and/or production of 20 original plays written by playwrights of color, the reconstitution and development of a new Board, the founding and expansion of programming for Q Up, a five-day arts intensive for Asian American high school girls from Queens, the founding of Rising Circle’s, INKtank, a 12-week writers lab for writers of color, currently in its 5th year, and a new play development program.
