Common Ground - Addressing Immigration

By Braver Angels

Overview

A workshop to bridge the divide on Immigration in a Report to the Nation.

Note: Free registration can be accessed using Promo Code "Braver". You will not need physical or virtual tickets to attend this event.

Join us in Houston for an in-person Common Ground Workshop on Addressing Immigration. The results from this and similar events across the country will be shared directly with Members of Congress in a final Report to the Nation.

Braver Angels across the country are working to demonstrate to Congress and the nation that Americans with differing views on immigration can find common ground. We are holding a Braver Angels immigration event in every state and every congressional district of Problem Solvers Caucus members. (Problem Solvers Caucus is a group of Members of Congress–split between Republicans and Democrats–committed to solving problems and bipartisanship.)

In Houston, our workshop will bring together equal numbers of Conservatives and Liberals. Together participants talk about their connection to the issue of Immigration and their opinion on solutions. The workshop does not seek to change participants' views or drive to some compromise -- rather to discover and articulate ideas they hold in common. By the end of the 5 hour event they have come up with jointly and unanimously held Points of Agreements on values, concerns and policies.

Goals:

Your voices will make a difference. The workshops culminate in a Report to the Nation, shared directly with Members of Congress, outlining key policy recommendations on immigration that reflect red/blue common ground from the grassroots and national work.

How you can join:

We are seeking people with different perspectives — those who generally favor more permissive immigration policies and those who favor more limited approaches — to come together with a moderator and find points of agreement on immigrant rights, policies, and remedies.

There are two ways to join the Common Ground Workshop:

  • Participant: A participant will engage in small- and large-group discussions with individuals of both the same and different political persuasions. Participants must identify as “red” (Republican or leaning conservative) or “blue” (Democrat or leaning liberal). We will strive for an equal balance of red and blue participants: 4 to 8 people on each side.
  • Observer/Alternate: An observer/alternate will not participate in the discussions directly but will have the opportunity to watch and listen. Observers/Alternates should be ready to step in and participate in the event of participant cancellations.
  • NOTE: Please register for yourself. Each person must register individually. If you wisht to attend with a friend, provide them with the link and ask them to register.

Who can come? Anyone interested in developing a deeper understanding of, and connection with, people whose political beliefs differ from their own. You should honestly be able to answer "yes" to the following question:

“Are you willing to listen to the other side, and are you willing to speak to the other side with respect?”

Everyone who signs up will receive a phone call or email from an organizer. Organizers reserve the right to switch people between Participant and Observer/Alternate status depending on the needs of the workshop.

(Because we are carefully managing registrations to achieve our goals for this workshop, it may appear that a “ticket” is listed as “sold out.” If you wish to participate but are unable to register for your preferred option, please email ganderson@braverangels.org to discuss possible arrangements.)

*Tickets are Free, Donations Help Use promo code BRAVER during registration to get a free ticket. Donations beyond the free ticket support Braver Angels, 501(c)3.
