'Invisible Palettes', a collaborative color perception art/science project inspired by and in collaboration with Nobel Laureate Frank Wilczek, Professor Nathan Newman, and the rest of the ASU SciHub team, is on exhibit right next door to Neeb Hall in the Harry Wood Gallery ( first floor of the Art Building). Paintings by Penny Cagney blend art with cutting-edge science, revealing the hidden worlds of color that exist beyond human sight by exploring how color is perceived differently by humans and animals.
The project incorporates the HyLighter, a new technology that uses ten programmable monochromatic light beams to simulate varied visual experiences across species. When illuminated with scientifically determined combinations of these light beams and paired with spectroscopically characterized paints, the artworks reveal how the world might look to a bee, a bird, a fish, or someone with a different form of human color vision. The work bridges fine art, optical sciences, and perception theory to create visually striking compositions with educational depth.
Lecture attendees are invited to enjoy a reception and refreshments in the Lobby of the Art Buiilding immediately following the Wilczek lecture.
