Training Workshop -

Collaborating to Manage Ecosystems

Presented in a hybrid format (online and in-person: both are required)

Online training:

  • 8 hours of instruction is to be completed at your own pace between 25 Sept and 23 Oct 2017

In-person training:

  • Two day in-person training is to be attended 24 Oct (10am-6pm) and 25 Oct (8am-5pm) at Wekiwa Springs State Park, Apopka, FL

This workshop (formerly "Working Across Boundaries to Protect Ecosystems") enhances skills in collaborating, explains how and when to use working groups, and showcases successful examples of managing natural areas in the context of a larger ecosystem, in coordination with neighboring land owners, land managers, and other outside influences.

Participants will:

  • Discover strategies that bring multiple organizations and private individuals together to achieve common goals and seek common solutions

  • Learn how to use working groups to cope with complex environmental issues

  • Develop and practice skills in listening, communicating, moderating group dynamics, and facilitating to cope with conflict

  • Better understand the concept of "ecosystem management" and its relevance to resource management

  • Participate in a field tour that highlights approaches suitable for addressing complex threats facing entire ecosystems

Registration Fee:

  • $275 (does not include lodging)

Optional Lodging:

  • $40/person/night at Wekiwa Springs State Park (2 people per cabin*; NATA will make reservations and match roommates)


  • Lunch, coffee, water, and snacks will be provided by NATA during the training on Oct 24 & 25. Workshop participants are responsible for all other meals.


Will be processed through the Eventbrite website at the time of registration. There are 2 payment options:

  1. Pay with a CREDIT CARD online at the time of registration on the Eventbrite website. The confirmation email will contain your reciept.

  2. Pay by CHECK via mail by requesting an INVOICE at the time of registration on the Eventbrite site. The invoice will be emailed to you within 36 hours and your check will be expected within 2 weeks.

All cancellation requests are subject to a $25 fee; NO refunds will be offered after registration closes (22 Sept).

Group registration rates may be available for one employer registering >2 participants. Please contact nata@ifas.ufl.edu for details.

*Please note these are rustic one room cabins. You will need your own linens (sheets, towels, blanket, pillow). Each cabin has a bathroom shared between 2 people. If you prefer to secure your own lodging, the Holiday Inn and Hampton Inn in Apopka are nearby.
