CNC 1: INTRO TO 3 AXIS CNC MILL MACHINING AND CAM immerses enthusiasts into the often complex world of metalworking and machining. In this class you will develop an understanding ofthe breadth and range of metal cutting tools and machines, as well as gain practical skills in the art of “subtractive manufacturing”, or machining, starting from simple hand tools to a fully automated CNC machine!

By the end of this class, you will:

• Use common basic metal working tools like drills, drill presses, hacksaws, bandsaws and tap and die sets, and files correctly and safely.

• Understand metal fasteners, their use and selection.

• Understand the basic physical properties of metals; how to cut and drill them; and where and how to buy metal for use in your projects & designs.

• Accurately mark and lay out metal parts to desired tolerances.

• Use Fusion360 to model metal parts correctly and generate correct CAM workflows for the TAIG mill.

• Become certified to Use the 3 Axis Milling Machine (TAIG Micro Mill in Hexlab Makerspace) with a 12” x 5.5” x 6” travel range (XYZ) and a 3.5” x 18” mill table (working in wax).

• Get 1 hour of “open lab” time on the machine to do your own projects.

At the end of this class you'll be ready to take on my CNC2: Intermediate 3 axis milling and CAM class to learn how to operate larger machines and more advanced CNC machining techniques!
