CMI2 Wilderness Search and Rescue | May 13 - 17, 2025


In the wilderness and austere environments, one likely has minimal access to equipment, and the ability to improvise is crucial.


Wilderness Search and Rescue

Be able to identify the environment, type of terrain, and associated hazards involved in a wilderness incident, given the environmental conditions. Soldiers, First Responders, outdoor enthusiasts, and adventurists have limited access to equipment in the wilderness and austere environments, and their ability to improvise is crucial.

The CMI2 Wilderness Search and Rescue course will equip participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively locate, treat, and evacuate lost or injured individuals in remote, challenging environments.

Individuals will be trained to the National Fire Protection (NFPA) 1006, Chapter 11, Wilderness Search and Rescue Technician Level.

  • Wilderness First Aid: Gain crucial medical knowledge and practical skills to assess and treat injuries and illnesses in remote settings where immediate medical help is unavailable, including CPR, wound management, fracture care, and recognizing and treating environmental emergencies like hypothermia and heatstroke.
  • Patient Packaging and Extrication: Learn safe and effective techniques for preparing an injured person for transport and using various carries and equipment like litters.
  • Rope Work and Technical Rescue: Some courses include training in knot tying, anchor systems, belaying, rappelling, and basic techniques for rescues involving steep terrain.
  • Communication: Understand and practice effective communication protocols within a SAR team and with other agencies, including radio operation and signaling.
  • Lost Person Behavior: Learn about the typical patterns and behaviors of individuals lost in the wilderness, which helps predict their likely location.
  • Incident Command System (ICS): Gain familiarity with the standardized organizational structure used to manage emergency incidents, ensuring efficient and coordinated operations.
  • Hazard Assessment: Develop the ability to identify and mitigate potential hazards for both the search team and the missing person.


Course Credentials

  • By utilizing traditional classroom lectures, onsite demonstrations, and experimenting with new technologies, such as delivering crucial supplies by TRV (drones) and other methodologies, CMl2 presents beneficial real-world, hands-on experiences for participants.
  • CMl2 strives to provide scenarios one may face while attending a medical emergency in an austere environment.


Additional Topics

Example program topics include airway emergencies with tissue sample demonstrations, rope training for high-level rescues, chest injuries, hypothermia, shock, splints, and many others.

  • Registration fee: $1190* - The registration fee includes four nights/five days of lodging, meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), course instruction, and processing fees.
