What is Clean Coffee?

Clean Coffee is a remote meetup where people working in technology come together to discuss how to make tech greener and more environmentally sustainable.

What's in it for me?

As tech workers, we have a lot of influence within our companies so why not use some of it to cut down on carbon emissions? This is the idea behind ClimateAction.tech, a network of technology professionals coming together to find solutions to fight climate change.

Clean Coffee is a chance to get together in an online setting and pool together our thoughts, ideas and experiences so that we can enact change on an organisational level.

How does it work?

The meetup follows the Lean Coffee format where participants start by putting forward topics they would like to discuss and then vote on the topics they are most interested in. The topics are then ranked by popularity and the discussion kicks off with the most popular topic. After 8 minutes, the group votes on whether to allocate an extra 3 minutes to the topic or move on to the next topic on the list. Discussion continues until the hour is up.

After the meetup, a document will be shared with links and ideas that were shared throughout the session.

Who's behind Clean Coffee?

To make sure the discussion stays on track, the sessions will be facilitated by Chris and Alicia.

Chris is an environmentally-focussed tech generalist based in Berlin. He's spent the last ten years working in tech startups, blue chip companies and government, as a user researcher, product manager, developer, sysadmin and UX-er.

Alicia is also somewhat of a tech generalist. Having spent the last five years working as a data scientist for a variety of Berlin- and London-based startups, she is now focusing her attention on agile coaching. Like Chris, she's interested in fighting climate change and getting better at facilitating remote meetings.

Where did the idea come from?

This meetup is heavily inspired by Emily Webber's awesome meetup Agile in the Ether.

What do I need to take part?

  • a computer with access to install zoom on
  • decent internet connection to cope with a video call
  • a webcam and microphone so everyone can see and hear you
  • a quiet space and headphones so you can hear everyone
  • a desire to learn and share
