KEY INFORMATION

  • LOCATION: Virtual, on Zoom
  • DATE & TIME: Tuesday, Dec 2, 2025, 7-9pm
  • LED BY: Glen Stuart
  • CTLE AVAILABLE: 2hrs
  • THIS WORKSHOP IS FOR: teachers of any grade engaging students in inquiry, research, phenomenon-based learning, and/or project-based learning.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

The Claims, Evidence, Reasoning (CER) framework aims to provide language and techniques to help your students construct clear, evidence-based arguments and explanations. Leveraged in combination with responsive teaching, these strategies exceed the sum of their parts to increase student learning and outcomes, making student thinking visible. This 2-hour virtual workshop asks you to engage in a case study - a specific activity from an Environmental Science classroom - but the techniques can be adapted to any subject depending on your needs. You will start in student mode, and engage with and experience what these strategies look like, sound like, and feel like. Then, you will shift into teacher mode to unpack these ideas as they relate to our classrooms. By the end of the workshop you will be able to define CER as well as ecological resilience, identify and counter common student misconceptions about both ideas, and build the confidence to adapt and implement these strategies in your classroom.

THIS WORKSHOP IS ALSO PART OF AN AUTUMN SERIES for teachers using research project-based curriculum working up to student-driven investigations and year-end project showcases. All are welcome to join, and participants in the NYAS Scientist in Resident program are specifically invited. Other workshops in this series include:
