About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour

When 2,500 cyclists pedal south out of San Francisco on June 1, it will mark the final send-off for AIDS/LifeCycle. After three decades and more than $300 million raised, the iconic 545-mile ride to Los Angeles will come to a close this summer, ending one of the region’s most visible and enduring symbols of the fight against HIV and AIDS.Before the riders don their spandex and saddle up, join the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation at Manny’s on May 20 for a special event reflecting on this historic moment with SF AIDS Foundation CEO Tyler TerMeer.

TerMeer will discuss AIDS/LifeCycle’s origin, its enormous impact over the past 31 years and how he and organizers made the decision to end the ride in 2025.

He and AIDS/LifeCycle Development Manager Curtis Bass will also share their personal experiences inside the “Love Bubble,” including treasured memories; traditions; and the ride’s life-changing role in building visibility, raising funds and forging community.

Curtis Bass is the development manager for AIDS/LifeCycle. Bass was first introduced to the event in 2012 and completed his first ride in 2015. Since then, the experience and community have become an integral part of his life and advocacy. In 2019, he joined the board of directors for Positive Pedalers and has proudly served as board president since December 2020. He also serves as captain of the New Bear Republic cycling team and regularly participates in charity cycling events across the country, using each opportunity to promote awareness, build community, and support those affected by HIV/AIDS. Bass is deeply committed to ending stigma through positive visibility and public engagement. As a passionate advocate, he remains focused on raising the critical funds needed to support treatment, education and outreach efforts for those most in need.

Tyler TerMeer: Dr. TerMeer is CEO of San Francisco AIDS Foundation and co-chair of the AIDS United Public Policy Council. He is passionate about improving the health of people living with HIV, ensuring that LGBTQ+ people have access to affirming care, and supporting and empowering Black-led organizations and BIPOC leaders. Dr. TerMeer has been honored by the White House as one of the “Nation’s Emerging LGBTQ+ Leaders,” and as part of the “Nation’s Emerging Black Leadership.”
