What is a cappella music?

A cappella is singing performed without any instrumental accompaniment, using only the human voice to create melody, harmony, and rhythm. The term originates from the Italian phrase alla cappella, meaning "in chapel style" or "in the manner of the chapel".

The term Evensong derives from the Anglo Saxon word ‘oefen-sang’. Before the Reformation, it was the English name for the service of Vespers, the seventh of the eight daily canonical ‘hours’ sung in monasteries and cathedrals.
