In this four week series of classes, you and your support person will learn about the following:

  • stages of labor and birth process
  • breathing and relaxation techniques
  • comfort measures
  • role of the support person
  • pain management options
  • cesarean birth preparation and mother care after delivery
  • newborn care and feeding
  • postpartum care


NOTE: Register for the class early in your fifth month of pregnancy; plan to take the class during your seventh or eighth month of pregnancy; and try to finish your class series at least three weeks before your due date.

Please only register the birthing person. The cost of $90 covers both the birthing person and their support person.

When does this class meet?

This class meets once per week for four weeks. Each class session is from 6:00pm to 9:00pm

Can I also schedule a tour of the Salem Health Family Birth Center?

This class includes a tour of the Family Birth Center! You do not need to register separately to get the tour.

Can I bring someone with me to class?

Yes. The class is built for the pregnant person and a support person (this can be anyone who will be supporting the pregnant person while they are in labor). We highly encourage everyone to bring a support person. However, multiple support persons are not permitted.

Does my support person also need to register and pay the $90?

No. The registration and cost covers both the pregnant person and the support person.

When should I take this class?

We recommend taking this class during your seventh or eighth month of pregnancy. We recommend that the final class session should occur roughly three weeks before your due date. Please note that these classes sometimes fill quickly, so we HIGHLY suggest registering early.

Is this class offered online?

No. Our curriculum is best when offered in an in-person class setting. We do not offer an online version of this course at this time.

Can medical insurance pay for this class?

The CHEC is not able to accept insurance. However, some insurance companies will offer a reimbursement payment for this class. Please contact your insurance provider for details. Our staff is happy to provide additional documentation, if requested, to help in the reimbursement process.

This class is expensive. Do you offer any discounts?
