Check for Understanding in Math: Train-the-Trainer Workshop

The Math Problem Every School Leader Knows Too Well

Your teachers are working hard. Your students are trying. But math scores aren't moving. Sound familiar? You're not alone.

The issue isn't effort, it's visibility. In most math classrooms, teachers can't see what students actually understand until it's too late. By the time the assessment reveals the gaps, you're already behind.

- "My teachers think the lesson went great, then the assessment shows 60% of kids are lost."

- "We're constantly reteaching entire units because we didn't catch misconceptions early."

- "Students are hiding their confusion behind nodding heads and blank stares."

Finally: A System That Shows You What's Really Happening

TLAC's Checking for Understanding in Math workshop gives your teachers proven techniques to spot student confusion in real-time, while they can still fix it.

This isn't another theoretical PD. This is a practical system your teachers can use the very next day to transform how they teach math.

See It In Action: Real Teachers, Real Classrooms

What makes TLAC training different? You'll watch actual classroom videos showing these techniques in action. This isn't a boring lecture.

See exactly how master teachers:

  • Circulate to catch student errors as they happen
  • Create environments where students feel safe showing confusion
  • Turn wrong answers into powerful learning moments
  • Use quick checks to guide their next instructional move
  • Prepare their lesson plans for data tracking

No other training gives you this level of visual clarity. All TLAC workshops utilize content from our video library of over 1,700 clips collected over 17 years from master teachers around the globe. You'll leave knowing exactly what these techniques look like in real life.

Practice Until You're Confident

You won't just learn these techniques. You'll practice them repeatedly until you can teach them to others.

Through guided practice sessions, participants will:

  • Practice techniques with peers
  • Get feedback from expert facilitators
  • Build confidence through repetition
  • Action plan to guide practice with teachers back at school

Leave ready to lead professional development that actually changes teacher practice.

What Your Team Will Master

✅ The "Replace Self-Report" Technique
Stop asking "Does everyone understand?" (Hint: They'll always say yes.) Instead, get actual data on what every student knows.

✅ Active Observation Strategies
Circulate strategically to track mastery, mistakes, and trends.

✅ Culture of Error
Make students feel safe showing their work, even when they're wrong.

✅ Planning for Mistakes
Anticipate likely errors to tackle misconceptions before they grow and become more difficult to address.

✅ Retrieval Practice Integration
Ensure learning sticks long-term with research-backed techniques.

✅ Targeted Timely Reteaching
Effectively revisit content that didn’t stick the first time.

✅ Lesson Preparation Best Practices
Format and annotate lesson plans to check for understanding efficiently.
