Check for Understanding Train-the-Trainer Workshop

February 9-10, 2026

One of the cornerstones of effective math instruction is a teacher’s ability to gather data on student understanding, identify errors where they exist, and respond effectively and efficiently to these errors during lessons so they can improve students’ skills and confidence with the content. How math teachers follow up on this learning is at least as important, whether that’s by providing targeted reteaching to address common errors or embedding Retrieval Practice to ensure what was learned is remembered for the long term. We’ll also discuss the critical role that Lesson Preparation plays in making all of this possible, by exploring practices like Exemplar Planning and Planning for Error. This workshop is targeted for teachers and leaders of grades 3-12.

Join the Teach Like a Champion team to prepare to deliver high quality training on Check for Understanding in Math. Ensuring all students master rigorous content requires that teachers engineer their classrooms to Check for Understanding systematically and effectively. This workshop will help leaders equip teachers to expose student misunderstandings intentionally and to respond to error productively.

WE WILL ANALYZE AND PRACTICE:

• Gathering data effectively through revised Teach Like a Champion techniques including Reject Self Report, Targeted Questioning, Standardize the Format, Active Observation, and Show Me.

• Creating a safe and productive environment in which students reveal their misconceptions by creating a Culture of Error via Expect Error, Withhold the Answer, Manage the Tell, and Praise Risk Taking.

• Responding immediately to student misunderstandings through Lesson Preparation: Plan the Exemplar, Plan the Exemplar, Plan for Error, and Plan Means of Participation.

• Ensuring that student learning is durable through Retrieval Practice.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

Our workshops are a “Train-the-Trainer” model. We prepare instructional leaders and school leadership teams to deliver excellent training on Teach Like a Champion 3.0 techniques. Schools typically send a team of two to five instructional leaders and teachers in order to have several key team members responsible for turn-keying the work back at their campuses.

Workshop attendance fee:

$1,000.00 per person for 2 full days of training (includes breakfast and lunch). Note: you will receive an invoice after the workshop for the training fees that can be paid by credit card or bank transfer.

Implementation toolkit license fee:

$1,000.00 per school for materials (optional) with signed license agreement.
