Check for Understanding in Math: Train-the-Trainer Workshop

One of the cornerstones of effective math instruction is a teacher’s ability to gather data on student understanding, identify errors where they exist, and respond effectively and efficiently to these errors during lessons so they can improve students’ skills and confidence with the content. How math teachers follow up on this learning is at least as important, whether that’s by providing targeted reteaching to address common errors or embedding Retrieval Practice to ensure what was learned is remembered for the long term. We’ll also discuss the critical role that Lesson Preparation plays in making all of this possible, by exploring practices like Exemplar Planning and Planning for Error. This workshop is targeted for teachers and leaders of grades 3-12.

Join the Teach Like a Champion team to prepare to deliver high quality training on Check for Understanding in Math. This workshop content draws in part from what the TLAC Team has learned from deep consulting partnerships with school districts and CMOs who are prioritizing math instruction. It is designed to deepen math teachers' and leaders' understanding of the science of how students learn, and equip them with tools and techniques that outstanding math teachers use to apply that research in their classrooms so they can Check for Understanding systematically and effectively.

WE WILL ANALYZE AND PRACTICE:

● Lesson Preparation techniques that position teachers to respond immediately to student misunderstandings, including Plan the Exemplar and Plan for Error.

● Gathering data effectively through revised Teach Like a Champion techniques including Replace Self Report and Active Observation.

● Creating a safe and productive environment in which students reveal their misconceptions by creating a Culture of Error via Expect Error, Withhold the Answer, Manage the Tell, and Praise Risk Taking.

● Effectively reteaching through Explicit Direct Instruction, Worked Examples, and Error Analysis Do Nows

● Ensuring that student learning is durable through Retrieval Practice.
