Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870) brought a staggering array of wonderful literary characters into the world — characters who remain in one’s literary psyche long after the books are put down. While we're all familiar with his works like A Christmas Carol, how much do you really know about the author's life journey, or the personal struggles he faced even when he found career success? It's time to unravel the mysteries surrounding Dickens and uncover the rarely told story of this author's wild imagination and private life like never before.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the life and legacy of English fiction writer Charles Dickens, from growing up in poverty and working at a damp factory, to rising up the literary ladder and achieving phenomenal fame and fortune.

Led by art historian Bertie Pearce, our whistle-stop tour of Dickens' incredible story will include:

  • A look back at the pain of his early childhood on the streets of London — while they haunted him for the rest of his life, they inspired masterful works such as Oliver Twist and Little Dorrit
  • How London shaped Dickens, and how Dickens shaped London — he knew the streets of early 19th century London better than anyone, and in works like Bleak House, recreated the city for generations to come
  • How he helped to reinvent Christmas with his masterpiece A Christmas Carol (1843) with unforgettable characters like Scrooge, and imagery like the warmth of hearth and home and the Christmas goose with chestnuts by the fire
  • A discussion of his passion for social reform and how he used his writing to fight for education, sanitation, and child protection reforms
  • His turbulent private life after he abandoned his wife Catherine, which included pursuing a young actress called Nelly Ternan
  • Ways he reconnected with his audience through public readings in England and the United States
  • Readings of his works by Bertie, which will bring his vivid characters to life and make you laugh and cry at the same time

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Bertie — any and all questions about Dickens are welcomed and encouraged!
