Event description

Workshop Descriptor:

Inquiry driven classrooms create vast adisciplinary units driven by students’ fascination with the world around them. Although teachers recognize that maths are fundamental to that world, building a similar frame for student driven exploration that generates interest and fascination for numeracy and algebraic thinking.

Seymour Papert ‘s “Mathland” thought experiment suggests that as a young person will naturally learn to speak the language that surrounds them on a daily basis, a person living where the language of mathematics is integral and useful to everyday challenges would naturally acquire math skills. Papert spent decades showing how using “the computer as material” creates a door into Mathland for students and teachers.

In the Constructing Mathland workshop, you’ll take a guided tour of Papert’s Mathland using the best pedagogy from over 40 years of the LOGO movement. Participants will explore Mathland like students, finding new pathways into the core concepts of a K-8 mathematics curriculum.

This workshop is perfect for homeroom teachers and curriculum coordinators looking for ways to build powerful and open-ended maths inquiry.

What to bring:

Participants will need a laptop on which they can install software. There will be a small supply of laptops available for teachers who only have a tablet or lack administrative access on their laptop.

Participants will:

  • Explore core concepts from the elementary and middle school math curriculum using “the computer as material.”

  • Learn kid-focused programming tools that center numeracy and algebraic thinking.

  • Build prompts that excite and inspire students to develop maths skills.

  • Create physical maths artifacts to take back to the classroom.

  • Discover great (free!) tools for maths inquiry.

  • Refine wild ideas into compelling, and workable prompts for students.

  • Engage with Seymor Papert’s “hard fun” of learning.

Workshop Presenters Biography:
Andrew Carle taught math and computer programing for over a decade before launching his first interdisciplinary Makers program at Flint Hill School in 2011. As that program grew, Andrew has led hands on workshops at local, state and national education conferences (FabLearn, VAIS, VSTE, NAIS, Design Do Discover), and is a Senior FabLearn Fellow. He joined Chadwick International’s exemplary Design faculty in 2014.
