CFAN Theatre: 《井底天空》Skywatching Down the Well
Overview

Plot Summary:
Skywatching Down the Well is a play inspired by the Chinese idiom “The Frog at the Bottom of the Well” (井底之蛙).While the phrase is often interpreted as describing someone narrow-minded or lacking ambition, this play reimagines the idiom through a different lens. Set in Weilan Village, a small mountain community in Southwest China, the story explores the tension between confinement and aspiration, memory and belonging. Through the lives of two generations of villagers who leave, those who stay, and those who return, Skywatching Down the Well questions what it really means to look up at the sky from the bottom of a well.
The play focuses on the parallel stories of three main characters: Shen Mo (“Momo”), a girl who grew up in Weilan Village and later left for college in Beijing; Yan Yang, a boy who gave up the national college entrance exam (Gaokao) and chose to remain in the village; and Lin Xinan, their teacher, who devoted her life to staying in the village and educating its children. Through their intertwined journeys—one leaving, one staying, and one quietly witnessing both—Skywatching Down the Well examines themes of home and belongingness, fate and choices, freedom and reconciliation.
