Event description
Covering the 2020 Census is important. Join us for a workshop about Census coverage, resources, tools and New Jersey sources who can help.

About this Event

The U.S. Census is a monumental task that underpins the workings of our nation's democracy, and the results of the upcoming Census will deeply affect communities for years to come.

That's why it is critical for media to play a role in getting accurate and timely information about the Census out to their audiences.

But covering the Census can be confusing and the amount of data overwhelming.

Join us on Aug. 22 for a workshop about the Census tailored specifically for New Jersey media and individual journalists. The workshop will include:

  • An overview of the Census and the local response, led by the chair of the Census 2020 NJ Coalition.
  • An overview of the Census Public Information Office and the resources available for journalists, the communications program planned around the 2020 Census and a timeline of what we will see during the next year.
  • An overview of local partnership and activities from the New York regional office.
  • An tutorial on how to use the Census platform and data tools.
  • A conversation with New Jersey journalists who have already been covering the Census about their approach, challenges they've faced and what they are expecting.
  • A conversation with nonprofits and community organizers leading the response across New Jersey.

Morning refreshments and lunch will be provided. The workshop is being coordinated by the Center for Cooperative Media at Montclair State University and is funded by the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. A limited number of travel stipends will be made available if traveling to, or participating in, the workshop creates an economic hardship.
