Our Opportunity

Our region’s racial diversity can be one of our greatest assets in our pursuit for economic growth and competitiveness. Only when we move from curiosity to consciousness, do we begin to power inclusion. The opportunity in our region is tremendous.

In fact, Minneapolis-St. Paul is one of the few metro areas that can boast nearly 20 Fortune 500 companies, one of the strongest economies in the nation, and a skilled and diverse workforce with the talent to compete globally. Yet, our economy is slowing, and we need skills, tools, and resources to engage everyone fully in our economy and build communities that thrive because of our diversity, not despite it.

Together, we will shape local and national action on inclusive economic growth and increase awareness of its benefits, possibilities, and pathways from awareness, to action, to accountability.

About the Summit

After a sold-out inaugural Summit in 2019, the Summit returns December 4 to convene regional leaders and equip them with the knowledge they will need to identify and disrupt racism within systems designed to exclude people of color, are failing people of color today, and are constraining our overall regional economy.

You’ll gather with hundreds of private sector, public sector, and civic and nonprofit leaders from across the Minneapolis-St. Paul region working to create an inclusive regional economy. You’ll go beyond embracing the ideals of economic inclusion and engage in a daylong experience that will transform those ideals into action and impact!

Plenary speakers and breakout-session leaders will challenge us to better understand the importance of history and reconciling the impacts that history has had on the way Black, Indigenous, and people of color experience our community and our economy. Activities throughout the day will inspire us to leverage that knowledge to develop anti-racist systems and organizations.

In one powerful day, Summit participants experience shared awareness and accountability, and make a commitment to take disruptive action to achieve racial equity and economic inclusion.

You’ll leave the Summit equipped with the knowledge, tools, and networks to disrupt inequitable policies and practices and take daily actions that lead to increased growth, innovation, and inclusive workplaces.

Legal and policy expert on economic development and opportunity in Indian Country (descendant Standing Rock Sioux [Hunkpapa]).

LUNCH PLENARY: Nikole Hannah-Jones
Creator of the landmark 1619 Project and award-winning investigative reporter covering racial injustice for The New York Times Magazine.

AFTERNOON PLENARY: Samuel N. Ndely
Co-founder and Vice President of Graveti, building a regional ecosystem of tech opportunities for tech entrepreneurs of color to build wealth for their businesses and communities.

About the Speakers

Morning Plenary

Patrice H. Kunesh is a legal and policy expert on economic development and opportunity in Indian Country, former Vice President of the Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank, former Deputy Under Secretary of the U.S.D.A., and descended from the Standing Rock Sioux [Hunkpapa].

Lunch Plenary

Nikole Hannah-Jones is an award-winning investigative reporter who covers civil rights and racial injustice for The New York Times Magazine. Her 1619 Project (2019, The New York Times) commemorates the 400th year of slavery in what would become the United States by examining slavery’s modern legacy and reframing the way we understand this history and the contributions of black Americans to the nation.

Afternoon Plenary

Samuel N. Ndely is Co-Founder and Vice President of Graveti, a social venture that focuses on increasing diversity and inclusion in the Minnesota tech start-up community. The company creates pathways to success for people of color in the tech and startup ecosystem, with a strong focus on Latino/a and Blacks.

POWERING INCLUSION is an ongoing series designed to equip leaders to lead through a lens of Race + Place + Income, positioning the Minneapolis-St. Paul region as a hub for talent, investment, and innovation to increase our economic competitiveness.

Parking at Hilton Minneapolis: Paid parking is available in the Hilton Minneapolis underground parking ramp. The parking garage entrance is on 11th Street on the right between 2nd Avenue and Marquette.

For valet parking, continue past the garage to Marquette and turn right. Follow Marquette to the main hotel entrance. There are several nearby municipal parking ramps on onstreet paid parking options.
