Zee Zee Theatre is thrilled to be offering Coast Salish youth-lead cultural workshops on June 14th in recognition of National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day, curated by our Indigenous Community Engagement Manager Alysha Collie. This is her final project with us in this role - SIGH! - so let's make it a big success!
During the second cedar weaving workshop of the day, Ali Casey, a Coast Salish youth Artist from the shíshálh First Nation, will lead Cedar Basket weaving where all community members will learn ancestral cedar weaving techniques to complete a small cedar basket.
Ali comes from a lineage of master cedar and Salish weavers. Red Cedar Weaving Woman Studio is Ali’s family-owned weaving company, where they teach classes and workshops to all community members. Their family owned business believes that everyone should be able to appreciate and learn about cedar weaving without extracting or appropriating knowledge that may not belong to their lineages.
While the techniques taught are traditional, contemporary basket moulds are given to participants to complete a small cedar woven basket.
This workshop is perfect for Indigenous folks who may not be from areas where cedar woven regalia is made or feel comfortable yet making regalia and for settlers interested in learning authentic Indigenous practices of cedar weaving.
By the end of this workshop, Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members will have learned from Ali about the significance of cedar in Coast Salish communities, how it is still being used today and create lasting connections with each other while taking home their own basket.
Ali will be facilitating the Cedar Basket Weaving Workshop in Green Thumb Theatre’s Studio B from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Space is limited to 20 participants. All workshop supplies needed to complete the basket will be available to participants.
This community workshop is open to everyone.
Early sign up tickets are reserved for Indigenous community members.
Tickets for non-Indigenous community members will open on May 23!
We look forward to sharing this day with you and uplifting incredible Coast Salish youth leaders in our community.
Thank you to the sponsors of this day: The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund, We Matter, Rise Consulting, and TD.
Event space donated by Green Thumb Theatre.
