THIS EVENT WILL BE RECORDED.
A Pathway of Playing and Doing
Presented by Margaret Woollett
Synopsis of talk: Join us for our next CCC Presents! as New Zealand calligrapher Margaret Woollett shares her personal journey of calligraphy and lettering, guided by her philosophy of "playing and doing." A childhood experience of being publicly called out for poor penmanship surprisingly ignited Margaret’s lifelong "Letter Love." Margaret recalls being captivated at a young age by Speedball Textbooks that eventually led to the discovery of Edward Johnston's seminal text, Writing and Illuminating and Lettering, which heavily influenced her work. Margaret’s presentation will highlight a series of challenging and "crazy" projects and her “play and do” problem-solving that led to some weird and wonderful things, including a back-lit book using LED lighting, papers made from a variety of fruits and vegetables, a papyrus scroll book, and a very large gilded and painted sign carved with a craft knife. In collaboration with her talented, supportive husband, who just happens to also be a craftsman builder, they quickly learned how to tackle the inevitable issues that crop up with each commission and “make stuff together really well.”
Margaret's Bio: Margaret Woollett is a New Zealand based letter artist. She has decades of experience in commercial lettering. Margaret thrives on experimentation, including through her playful use of tools, texture, media and writing surfaces. She has been a member of NZ Calligraphers for over 30 years. She has studied under many, prominent calligraphers including Brody Neuenschwander, Amity Parks, Yves Leterme, Jurgen Vercaemst and Lieve Cornil. Guided by her personal philosophy of “playing and doing,” Margaret is most content to create by hand and enjoys teaching and inspiring others (including her own grandchildren!) to move beyond self doubt to simply “play and do.”
