Join the Center for Art Law for a 30 minute conversation and walkthrough of one of our core research tools: the Case Law Database. This resource brings together legal filings and court decisions from around the world, from initial complaints to Supreme Court opinions, making legal histories more accessible to students, attorneys, academics, artists, and cultural heritage professionals.

The Database currently includes more than 920+ cases and continues to grow, reflecting developments across key areas of art law such as restitution, artists’ rights, copyright, fair use, artificial intelligence, authenticity, cultural heritage, and more. Users can search and filter by topic, ranging from antiquities and appraisal to VARA and looted art, and access Bluebook-formatted citations, original filings, and links to official dockets.

Atreya Mathur, Director of Legal Research and Shelby Jorgensen, Cooridnator of the Case Law Database will provide an overview of the resource, its search capabilities, and the kinds of cases and materials it covers. We will also discuss how the Database fits into the Center’s broader research initiatives and how it can be used and supported by the community. There will also be time for questions and discussion.
