Description
Please join us to celebrate the Canberra Launch of Graeme Innes' memoir 'Finding a Way', published by UQP at Paperchain Bookstore.
Lawyer, mediator, human rights and disability advocate, Graeme Innes has been the driver behind some of the most significant reforms in human rights and disability advocacy both nationally and internationally.
This is Graeme’s unique story of a life lived to the full. Born in the inner west of Sydney in 1955, his parents brought him up to believe that he should never be treated differently because of his disability. With evocative prose, Graeme captures a wonderful alternative history of growing up in Australia from the heightened other senses of a blind person’s perspective. Riding bikes, cranking up the engine of his father’s A-model Ford, huddling around the fire listening to the Argonauts on the radio, and writing to the crashing soundtrack of an old Perkins Braille machine at the North Rocks School for Blind Children.
A natural writer, Graeme reveals the fascinating machinations behind his work on the Disability Discrimination Act and, as the Commissioner at the Australian Human Rights Commission, leading work on Australia’s ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and details his involvement in the campaign for the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
Finding a Way is an enthralling and uplifting book about the legacy and life of an extraordinary man and his tireless fight for equality for all Australians. Don’t miss this special event.
