What is Butoh?
Originating in post-WWII Japan, Butoh is an avant-garde dance form often called the “dance of darkness,” yet it is inherently a journey toward the light. Through introspective exploration, Butoh unfolds as a transformative process that works with the archetypal shadows of the body and mind—inviting embodiment, realization, transformation, and liberation in service of life itself. Like the natural cycle of a seed sprouting, flowering, and withering, Butoh follows the fullness of creative impulse with courage and love for life, unrestricted and expansive.

About Nathan
Nathan is a seasoned dancer, creator, and facilitator of ritual life and art processes. With 25 years of experience studying, performing, and teaching Butoh and improvisational dance, he serves as steward of the MESA (Movement and Ecology Sanctuary for Art) in Southwest Colorado. Nathan leads annual Ritual Dance Camps at MESA, a sanctuary devoted to the recovery and cultivation of the spiritual heritage intrinsic to all humans, in service to the Holy.
