Event description

Description

“Building Recovery: Starting a Comprehensive Residential Program for Survivors of Human Trafficking” is a one-day conference designed for individuals and/or agencies looking to start their own residential program or who want to increase their knowledge on working with survivors of human trafficking. Staff from Safe Harbor, the first agency in the Richmond area to house and serve survivors of sex trafficking, will share their knowledge, expertise, and lessons learned.

Bonnie Martin, Licensed Professional Counselor and Independent Consultant, will be the keynote speaker for the event. Bonnie is a technical expert in the development of trauma informed mental health psychosocial programs. She specializes in complex trauma and has worked with thousands of victims of violence, exploitation, and human trafficking.

Participants will learn basic facts about human trafficking including how to identify a victim of sex trafficking, the unique needs of sex trafficking survivors and what the stages of change and recovery often look like based on trauma and the brain, what services can be provided to sex trafficking survivors in a residential setting as well as strategies for successful implementation, how to partner with counselors, the criminal justice system, and health care providers to provide coordinated care to sex trafficking survivors, how prevalent substance abuse is in trafficking situations as well as how to incorporate substance abuse recovery services into residential care for survivors, and how to measure program outcomes to evaluate the success of a residential program.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided by our host, Capital One. If you have questions, please contact Elena Brooks-Perkins, Education & Outreach Manager, at elena@safeharborshelter.com.

*Must register before April 22nd, 2019. No registration will be available on-site.
