With one in five children in the United States living in poverty, further action is needed to permanently break the cycle of child poverty.
Join The Century Foundation’s Bernard L. Schwartz Rediscovering Government Initiative and Center for American Progress on July 8th for a robust discussion on how we can reduce the child poverty rate and provide our youngest residents with the resources they need to reach their full potential.
*Please note the room for this event has changed to B-354*
The event is hosted in collaboration with Rep. Rosa DeLauro, who will discuss how we can build on recent victories that have cemented the Earned Income and Child Tax credits. The event will highlight expansions to the child credit like the Young Child Tax Credit Act (H.R. 4693) and universal cash allowances (used in most industrialized nations outside of the US), both of which have been explored in recent research by TCF's Rediscovering Government Initiative and Center for American Progress.
Additional speakers include:
- Melissa Boteach, Vice President, Poverty to Prosperity Program, Center for American Progress
- Peter Edelman, Director of Georgetown Center on Poverty and Inequality
- Irv Garfinkel, Mitchell I. Ginsberg Professor of Contemporary Urban Problems, Columbia University
- Cemeré James, Vice President for Public Policy, National Black Child Development Institute
- Tiffany Jones, Chairperson of the Montgomery County Head Start Parent Policy Council
- Jeff Madrick, Director of the Bernard L. Schwartz Rediscovering Government Initiative and Senior Fellow, The Century Foundation
- Renée Wilson-Simmons, DrPH, Director, National Center for Children in Poverty, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health (moderator)
