Artist-run galleries and project spaces provide alternative models for exhibiting and engaging with art outside of traditional gallery or institutional settings. Join Michelle Grabner, artist, writer, curator, and founder of the Suburban in Milwaukee; Vincent Uribe, creative entrepreneur and founding director of LVL3 in Chicago; and moderator Noah Hanna, Chicago-based curator and writer, for a conversation on the history of artist-run spaces, their role in the arts ecosystem, and the ways in which artists can collaborate and benefit from non-traditional modes of exhibition.

MICHELLE GRABNER

Michelle Grabner is the Crown Professor and senior chair of the painting and drawing department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she has taught since 1996. Grabner is represented by James Cohan Gallery in New York and several galleries internationally; she also co-curated the 2014 Whitney Biennial and curated the 2016 Portland Biennial. With her husband Brad Killam, Grabner co-founded the Suburban, which currently programs exhibitions in Milwaukee.

NOAH HANNA

Noah Hanna is a Chicago-based curator and writer. As the 2019–20 curatorial fellow at the Hyde Park Art Center, he co-curated the second iteration of Artists Run Chicago, a major survey of Chicago artist-run galleries and project spaces. He is a staff writer for The SEEN, and holds a master’s degree in modern and contemporary art: history, curating, and criticism from the University of Edinburgh.

VINCENT URIBE

Vincent Uribe is a Chicago-based creative entrepreneur. In addition to running LVL3, a platform dedicated to fostering creative networks for emerging and established artists from around the world, he is the art director of Arts of Life, providing artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities a collective space to expand their practice and strengthen their leadership. Uribe holds a BFA and a BA in Visual and Critical Studies from SAIC.
