About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

Over 60 million people in Europe are affected by cardiovascular diseases (CVD): despite a decline in CVD mortality, heart attacks and strokes remain by far the leading cause of death in the EU, accounting for 36% of all deaths and contributing to around 16% of healthcare expenditure. While lifestyle changes are important, screening and early detection based on pre-identified risk factors are key to lower morbidity and mortality rates and alleviate the burden of CVD management on health systems.

Hosted by MEP Tomislav Sokol, this event will feature experts from academia, government, industry, and the scientific and patient communities. Together, we'll delve into best practices from Member States that have implemented measures aimed at reducing the burden of CVD and into national cardiovascular health plans. We will discuss how the EU can support Member States in developing and implementing robust prevention strategies, as well as discussing what should be featured in the upcoming EU Cardiovascular Health plan, to make sure it encompasses clear Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), adequate funding, and a focused approach towards early detection and screening for CVD that includes inherited lipid disorders.

With CVD being the main cause of death in the European Union, the time to rethink the healthcare systems’ response to CVD is now. Early detection and innovative screening tools can change the lives of many at risk of or unknowingly living with CVD. We look forward to an inspiring discussion on how we can unlock this huge potential.
