A Neighborhood Conversation Around Flood Mitigation Strategies, Community Power, & Protecting Our Homes

Join Neighbors Helping Neighbors, Rebuild by Design, and artist Tiffany Baker of the Dear Neighbor Project for an evening dedicated to flood preparedness, community storytelling, and practical home resilience.

As flooding events become more frequent in New York City, it is vital for homeowners and tenants alike to understand their risks and the resources available to them. This event brings together technical experts, housing counselors, and artists to foster a conversation about how we can protect our homes and support one another.

What to Expect

  • Understanding Your Risk & Resources:
Neighbors Helping Neighbors will present a comprehensive overview of the current flood risks facing New Yorkers. You will learn about the specific financial and assistance resources available to homeowners who are experiencing flooding or looking to retrofit their properties.
  • The Dear Neighbor Project:
We are honored to be joined by artist Tiffany Baker as part of her Dear Neighbor Project. This initiative turns the voices of residents into public art to raise awareness about the impact of flooding. Tiffany will be on-site to collect and listen to stories from attendees who have experienced flooding firsthand. Your story contributes to a powerful community narrative that advocates for better protection and resilience.
  • Technical Implementation Q&A:
Have questions about how to actually flood-proof your property? Sam Robinson, owner of the landscape design-build firm Field Form, will be our special technical guest. Sam specializes in resilient landscapes and flood mitigation retrofits. He will be available to answer your specific technical questions about implementation, drainage, and safeguarding your home.
  • Gifts For Flood-Affected Households:
Learn about HPD’s Basement Flood Mitigation Study, which offers personalized flood-risk assessments and mitigation options, and receive a free flood-mitigation gift from the consultants to help you get a head start on protecting your home.
