The Department of Small & Local Business Development (DSLBD) is collecting interest in future Build a Dream trainings to help provide information to the Department and our parnters for planning and conducting outreach for future training opportunities.
DSLBD has operated Build a Dream as an unfunded course, and at times has had stiped funding available from the DC Library Foundation, the DOES Thousand Opportunities Initative, and the DaQual Covington Memorial fund.
About this class
DSLBD has trained over 3,000 residents in the Build a Dream curriculum, mostly unfunded.
The curriculum is available to view online here. The course was designed and is typically instructed by Kate Mereand from DSLBD's Innovation & Equitable Development Division along with additional partners. The format of the class is discussion-based, working through the lean canvas methodology for business model development, customer discovery, basic business financials, and pitching in all it's forms. All participants will provide a short 2-minute pitch about their business or their business idea at the final session.
