Course Description:
Introduce the student to fine woodworking furniture. This is a hands on class. We will start from one rough lumber Cherry board to create a Shaker style Cherry Side Table with a drawer. The techniques and skills learned in this class will allow the student to approach any project size. With this class we will use virtually all the tools in the woodshop from Chisel to Tablesaw, Router, Band saw, Joiner, Planer and Miter saw. Demonstration on hand planing / sharpening if times allows.
You will learn how use a drawing plan to layout your project including wood grain consideration and joinery. Topics covered in the class: rough lumber to dimensional stock, drawer construction-fitting, table top-full assembly glue-up, Mortise-Tenon, Double Tenon, miters, Dovetail joint and lock joint. In addition, the student will learn some hand tool woodworking skills. Demonstration on finish process for you to complete your project on your own.
Optional - The student will have the option to join the instructor at the lumberyard to learn how to select and buy lumber - instructor will contact you to ask if you'd like to join.
The Complete Side Table Class is divided into 2 PART CLASS. EACH PART IS PRICED SEPARATELY (PART 2 IS $450 and will be made available by invitation only to enrolled students in this Part 1 session). Each part will have 5 sessions (3.5 hrs. per session) for a total of 35hrs of instruction.
***PLEASE NOTE: Tool testing for Router and Bandsaw is NOT included in this course, and should be arranged separately by each student.***
Class Goals:
Learn fine woodworking furniture building techniques and skills that can be used for any project size. Learn hand tools and power tools including Chisel to Tablesaw, Router, Band saw, Joiner, Planer and Miter saw. This is a class that will take the student from layout to a finish fine furniture Cherry Side Table with a drawer. Also, you will learn how to sand-assemble and apply oil / waterbase finish to guide you in the finishing process, ( finishing intended to be completed at home).
Prerequisites:
Students must be at least 18 years of age. Students who have taken A2's Tablesaw fundamentals tool training or or Tablesaw tested preferred but not required.
Materials Provided:
Fine hardwood including cherry and maple, knobs and finishing materials needed. A $190 materials fee is included in the ticket price and includes all materials needed for Part 1 class.
Class Minimum:
This class will not run with fewer than 3 students.
What to Bring/Wear:
Students must wear shop appropriate clothes (no loose/billowy clothing or dangling jewelry/straps/scarves) closed-toe shoes or work boots, long hair secured. Safety glasses required, some may be available on site.
Instructor Biography:
Francisco Leon's years of woodworking experience, combined with his love of design and his innate creativity and desire for the outdoors give him a unique advantage as a woodworker to make intended projects a reality. He brings a level of experience and skill necessary to achieve the aesthetic look and level of quality that is expected.
Francisco was first introduced to woodworking in his early teens by helping his father with home projects in his hometown Caracas, Venezuela. He has since relocated to the USA to pursue a career as an aerospace engineer with a strong passion to teach and open his own woodworking business, De Madera, "of wood." Since commencing his career as an engineer and with the belief that woodworking came naturally, he has since completed several personal wood projects including bedroom & child nursery furniture, display cases and a variety of children's toys. Woodworking craft is a combination of time, desire and skill that only one can achieve with commitment. Francisco offers this simple commitment to you to teach and pursue what he loves.
His hope is that through woodworking he can leave something with you that can be cherished for years to come. Francisco resides in the Boston area with his wife Karen & beautiful baby girl.
