Bug & Block: Linocut Carving Workshop at The Insect Asylum

Join us for a hands-on linocut printmaking workshop in the beautifully curious setting of The Insect Asylum! In this 2–3 hour class, you’ll learn the foundations of linocut carving and printing, using beginner-friendly techniques to design, carve, and print your own unique artwork. Absolutely no experience is required—just bring your curiosity and creativity.

You'll be guided step-by-step through the process of creating a design (or choosing from our bug- and critter-themed references), transferring it to a rubber block, and carving with your own style. Then, learn how to roll out ink and hand-print your final design onto paper. All materials are provided, and you’ll get to keep your carved block for future prints at home.

By the end of the class, you’ll walk away with a completed print, a reusable block, and a deeper appreciation for both the art of printmaking and the fascinating world of insects. Let the magic of The Insect Asylum inspire your design and creativity!

Accessiblity note: please be aware that our classroom spaces are not wheelchair access at this time. We are happy to accomodate with an accessible classroom space for insect pinning on a case by case basis. Please email us with accessiblity needs before the class at theinsectasylum@gmail.com

Additional Note: Families are welcome! Children under 18 should be accompanied by an adult. If you or your child would like to simply watch the class without participating, we’d love to have you. You can easily grab guardian/observer tickets at the front desk or online through our ticket portal.

About the artist:

Hello everyone! My name is Shannen (she/her), I am a printmaker currently focused on the linocut relief printing process, with a strong enthusiasm for experimental techniques. Drawn to the bold contrasts, tactile process, and the meditative rhythm of carving by hand, I find that carving can be restorative and a mental reset. I am passionate about art being accessible for everyone, playing with process, learning by doing, and discovering the satisfying results you can get with your individual creativity. This workshop will lead everyone through the process in an approachable and achievable way, making the act of creating one of personal exploration, curiosity, and fun! No prior skills or experience required.
