Alternative Service Breaks (ASB) is a weeklong service opportunity where students engage with different communities throughout the country over spring break. This year, ASB will take place Sunday, March 5 to Saturday, March 11, 2023.

By reconnecting with our community partners, ASB seeks to foster genuine connections between individuals and the community through meaningful service, emphasizing inclusivity, intentionality, empathy, cultural humility, and a deeper understanding of social justice. Volunteers will be able to explore this by doing service in a variety of focus areas including:

Animal Rights
Environmental Conservation
Health & Disabilities
Housing & Homelessness
Youth & Education

This year, we are travelling to 10 different locations across the United States, from rural Macon, Georgia to New Orleans, Louisiana. Each location offers a unique opportunity to learn in depth about the ways communities have historically and currently combat these inequities.

Registration will be open through mid-February, however, spots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. If capacity is reached before the deadline, registration will close early.

PLEASE READ these important Details for the Registration Process, as well as this complete list of FAQs.

1) You will need your CREDIT CARD INFORMATION to complete your ASB registration.

The "Ticket Buyer" name should be the name on the credit card used for payment.
The "Ticket 1- ASB 2023" name should be the student participating.
Students should only register for ONE (1) trip. Holding spots on multiple trips is not permitted.

2) Applying for a scholarship:

Scholarship applicants are required to pay a $150 deposit at registration.
In the ticket box above (desktop) or on the ticket page (mobile), select "Enter promotional code," enter ASB_Scholarship, and select "APPLY."
Scholarships of up to $925 are available to students who demonstrate financial need.We take into consideration a student’s un-met need, as determined by the Office of Financial Assistance, and extenuating circumstances that may impact a student’s ability to pay the program fee. Both domestic and international students can apply for scholarships.
Scholarship applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Typically, it takes 1-2 weeks for us to process and review applications.
Scholarship decisions and information on paying remaining balances will be sent to students on a rolling basis. If you receive a full scholarship, we will refund you the $150 deposit.

Bottom line, if you want to participate in ASB, we do not want one's finances to be a barrier!

3) If your 18th birthday is on or after March 5th, 2023, you will be required to download and complete the waiver by clicking here for the waiver for students under the age of 18. Both you and a parent/guardian must sign and return the completed waiver to the CSC via email (altbreak@bu.edu).

5) ASB is a drug and alcohol-free program for all staff and participants.
