About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour

Writer, filmmaker, and "hustler of culture" Kevin Smokler is bringing his new book, BREAK THE FRAME: CONVERSATIONS WITH WOMEN FILMMAKERS, to Chicago! He'll be joined by former Trib critic Maureen Ryan, author of BURN IT DOWN: POWER, COMPLICITY, AND A CALL FOR CHANGE IN HOLLYWOOD.

This sure-to-be-brilliant conversation will take place outdoors in the Jarvis Square Alfresco Area on Jarvis between Greenview and the red line tracks. Books will be available at Jarvis Square Books, 1522 W. Jarvis, or can be preordered via Bookshop. Kevin and Maureen will do a signing after the event.

Please note, the monthy Jarvis Square Artisan Market will run in the same space from 10-2. We encourage you to check it out, maybe have lunch in the Square, but event seating won't be available until 2:45ish.

Tickets are free and registration is not required, but it really helps us to have a rough headcount. See you there!

Frequently asked questions

What is the "Jarvis Square Al Fresco Area"?

It's a section of Jarvis closed to traffic and available for community use, right alongside the patios of R Public House, Taste Food & Wine, Jarvis Square Tavern, and Charmers Cafe. (Please do not use our neighbors' seating without patronizing their businesses!)

Will there be seating?

We'll provide around 30 folding chairs, and there are a couple of picnic benches next to the performance space. You're also welcome to bring your own camp chair.

Where can I park?

Non-permit street parking is available in the neighborhood, but it can be hard to find. There's a garage a couple blocks away at Sherwin and Sheridan.

How do I get there on the CTA?

Jarvis Square is right at the Jarvis Red Line stop and two blocks west of the 147 bus stop at Jarvis and Sheridan.

What if it rains?

We'll move indoors, either to the bookstore (1522 W. Jarvis) or a neighboring venue TBA, depending on crowd size.
