Event description

Description

“This is going to hurt me more than it hurts you.” How many of us have heard that phrase? Or how about, “Love hurts!” Those were statements many of us may have heard as children growing up from our parents or other adults who had the authority to use physical means to “discipline” us. As parents or adults, we’ve probably heard the following phrases: “Spare the rod, spoil the child” or “Beat ‘em, just don’t kill ‘em.” In these sessions, we will unpack the misconceptions concerning physical discipline as the only way to teach or correct our children and the negative impact it has on our community, which include not only the physical scars, but psychological and spiritual scars. We will also discuss slave/ex-slave narratives to expose the horrors of physical punishment inflicted on slaves during American slavery in order to keep them docile to their masters and how those oppressive behaviors have translated into how African Americans discipline our children. I hope you will join me to share your spanking testimonies as we work to “break the chains” that bind us and move into a higher love for our children and ourselves.
