Instructor - Dave Anderson
Dave Anderson has been building Pyronica, his propane-fired pipe organ, for five years, brazing steel to steel and copper to steel to make structurally strong, gas-tight joints. His software engineering day job does not let him get his hands dirty enough, as he is secretly a frustrated mechanical engineer.
Class Description
Do you want to grow your metalworking skills? Are you interested in joining metals in an aesthetically pleasing, structurally strong, and gas-tight way? Do you want to join different materials like steel, copper, or stainless?

Brazing is a 5000-year-old process for joining materials to make strong, gas-tight connections. It is a straightforward process and technique. In this course, you will learn:
- How brazing relates to welding and soldering
- How to select and prepare materials for brazing
- How to connect dissimilar metals and produce strong, gas-tight connections
Tool-testing on oxy-acetylene is not required, but anyone who is not tool-tested must arrive half an hour early to familiarize themselves with the equipment and get set up. Students should arrange tool testing with the shop lead in conjunction with this class.
At the end of the class, we will braze together test coupons and pull them apart to see how strong they are.
Material Fee
The materials fee for this class is $40. This is separate from the ticket price and is to reimburse the instructor for any tools or materials used in this class. This will be paid once, directly to the instructor at the start of the first class meeting. This instructor accepts payments in cash.
Class Goals
Learn to join different materials, particularly metals, and understand the tradeoffs with respect to welding or other joining processes.
Build confidence working with oxy-acetylene and hot metals.
Material Supplied
All materials will be supplied by the instructor.
