Program Notes

Kegelstatt is German for a nine-pin-bowling alley. The sublime trio composed for viola, clarinet and piano bears such title because it is believed that Mozart conceived it while playing rounds of bowling. The hasty handwriting of the autograph seems to prove this theory. Regardless, it is an unusual piece as it replaces the customary bass (cello) for an alto instrument (the viola, Mozart's acknowledged favorite) and pairs it with the clarinet, which became late in his life the perfect medium to render his antic disposition for juxtapositions of mood and sonic possibilities. The program is complemented by two late works that reflect his full mastery for a wide tonal and emotional range.

Program

Sonata in B-flat, K. 570, I. Allegro II. Adagio III. Allegretto

Trio for Piano, Clarinet and Viola "Kegelstatt", K. 498, I. Andante, II. Menuetto, III. Rondeaux (Allegretto)
