BlueStem Jazz presents Stier Sundstrom Double Quartet
The Stier Sundstrom Double Quartet is an 8-piece improvising ensemble co-led by bassists Aden Stier (MKE) and Jack Sundstrom (CHI). Drawing from Chicago, Madison, and Milwaukee, the group features top emerging voices in free jazz and experimental music. Inspired by Ornette Coleman’s Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation, the Double Quartet features a double rhythm section that explores spontaneous group composition, dense textures, and high-energy group improvisation.
Aden Stier is a bassist, composer, and multi instrumentalist from Madison, Wisconsin. A versatile composer and improviser, Aden hopes to draw inspiration from the whole scope of American music. Aden performs regularly in Wisconsin and Illinois as a leader and co-collaborator. Current projects include, Aden Stier Quintet, Stier/Sundstrom Double Quartet, Aden Stier Bell Ensemble, Jazz Flux, D'funk and the Grease Monkeys, Roman Sextet, and the Latin Jazz Jam at Zuzu's. Aden Holds a Bachelors in Music Performance from UW Madison.
Jack Sundstrom is a bassist, composer, and educator from Chicago. Sundstrom began his musical journey at the age of 4 studying traditional Celtic music with the great Noel Rice. He has since found a love for performing all kinds of creative and improvisational music. His style blends aspects of traditions from all over the world to create a fresh unique sound world.Sundstrom is a regular member of the Shout Section Big Band, the Academy of Irish Music, and regularly collaborates with the Marquette Park Composers Workshop.
