About this event

All events start and end at Trek Palm Springs - 611 S. Palm Canyon Dr Suite 24, Palm Springs, CA 92264.

Any rain of any amount resulting in wet roads/paths will cancel a ride.

All rides meet promptly at 6:30 am for event purpose and orientation, preparation, cycling tips, route review & safety review. Rides will depart at 7 am PT and complete between 8 am and 8:30 am PT.

Riders who do not participate in the pre-departure events will not be allowed to ride.

Permissible cycle types: road, mountain, gravel, cruisers (electric assisted ONLY). Our events will be primarily on surface streets or the CVLink.

Any cyclist may use an electrically-assisted bicycle of any type, but if participating with a cruiser, the only way to maintain the speed of the group and the distances involved (13-22 miles) while on a cruiser would be using one with electric assist.

Participants using a non-electric cruiser will not be permitted to ride the moai. All rides are beginner, fun, class D, or class C rides - this means speeds will typically fall in the 8-14 MPH range.

Remember the purpose of a Blue Zones Project natural movement moai is short, consistent and attainable.

MANDATORY for all participants BEFORE arriving for the event:

  1. Functioning bicycle: lubricated chain, no frayed/worn cables, tires filled to recommended pressure, properly adjusted seat height, functioning brakes
  2. Properly fitted helmet, worn correctly
  3. Bottle with water/hydration and a way to transport it on your bicycle (backpack or bottle cage on bike)
  4. Properly fitted shoes that match pedals (no mixing tennis shoes with pedal clips)
  5. Come prepared with an alternate plan for completion (Uber or friend) in the event you experience unfixable problems en route
  6. Cell phone - pictures, ride apps (eg, Ride w/ GPS or Strava), contact to call for a pickup in the event of any issue

Recommended:

  1. Eye protection, sun screen, lip balm, as necessary
  2. Padded cycling shorts or bibs (for maximum riding comfort)
  3. Second water bottle
  4. CO2 cartridge or small hand pump, extra tube sized to your tires
  5. Cycling tools for minor repairs, adjustments or tire changes
  6. Front &/or rear lights, for awareness in the early morning
  7. Cycling computer & knowledge of how to use it

Safety on our rides is the #1 PRIORITY. We follow the rules of the road, specifically:

  • Arrive fed (if necessary) and hydrated
  • Obey all traffic signals and signs - expect to full stop at all stop lights/signs
  • Helmets must be worn at all times
  • Use hand signals wherever possible
  • Pointing out and calling out obstacles or hazards on the road
  • Keep both hands on the handle bar unless signaling
  • Keep at least one bicycle length between you and the cyclist ahead of you
  • Ride single file as far to the right as safely possible
  • Pass on the left ONLY (NEVER pass another cyclist on their right)
  • Always look over your shoulder before changing your line of travel
  • No drafting, no pace lines
  • Unless you are hearing-impaired, ear buds are prohibited; no amplified sound
