In his book, Blood Legacy, Alex Renton tells the story of slavery, of abolition in 1833, of the millions of pounds in compensation paid to former slave owners by the British government, and the legacy of wealth and power that resides in the UK of today through his own family history.
Journalist for The Independent, The Times, Newsweek, and London Evening Standard on food, politics, war and child abuse in the UK, Middle East, Africa, East Asia and the Balkans. And winner of the One World Award and Glenfiddich Trophy for his investigative journalism, and conflict and development writing. He also presented the ITV documentary, Boarding Schools: The Secret Shame, in 2018. And is author of Planet Carnivore: how cheap meat costs the earth, Stiff Upper Lip and Blood Legacy.
We will also be joined in the conversation by Gloria Daniel who founded TTEACHPLAQUES.ORG in 2020 in a response to the murder of George Floyd and the ongoing "Hostile Environment “ Gloria’s great-great-grandfather John Isaac, was enslaved on a plantation in Barbados, owned by Thomas Daniel and his brother John. Gloria and members of her family are campaigning for Transatlantic Trafficked Enslaved African Corrective Historical ( TTEACH ) plaques to be placed as markers on the buildings and Companies that received over £20 million in compensation from the British Government following the Abolition of Slavery Act of 1833.
