About this event
Block Carving for Fabric Printing
If you are an artist looking for a new medium or someone who has never made art before and has been wanting to join in the fun, block printing on fabric is a very rewarding, fun, and magical process. Even if you are already a printmaker or have some experience with block printing, this class will have some great tips and tricks to sharpen up your practice and get your blocks ready for printing on fabric. The goal of this short lesson is to provide you with basic skills to design and carve a printing block that will print well on fabric. Topics during the class will include: brainstorming ideas for designs, creating illustrations, transfering your design to the block with a variety of techniques, tools & materials, and carving techniques. There will also be a short working session with time for conversation and questions. PLEASE NOTE: this workshop will not cover rolling out ink or the printing and pressing portion of the process, it will ONLY cover the creation of a block to be used later for printing. Please purchase a separate ticket if you'd like to join me for the printing portion of the workshop.
Frequently asked questions
This class does not require you to purchase materials, however, for the fullest experience of joining the live class it is great if you can acquire the tools and materials on the provided supply list
No, but I do appreciate an RSVP so I know how to prepare! While it is wonderful to have more folks in class working on projects, it is definitely not necessary to attend the workshop live. Everyone who registers will receive a link to the class recording a few days after the course ends.
Absolutely not. I encourage everyone interested in the arts to develop their own creative practice, and block printing is a great entry level medium! Art teaches us to make messes, make mistakes, and gives us a whole new way to build community and connect with each other.
This class could still be interesting, but it depends on how much experience you have with block printing on fabric. Blocks that work well for printing on fabric involve a bit of a different approach from start to finish. I also talk about different tools and transfer methods that may interest you
