Description

The University of Birmingham would like to invite you to a Birmingham Policy Lab workshop to explore the theme of the financing local public services.

As demands on public services grow and austerity looks set to continue, the need to reform and look afresh at the financing of local public services is more pressing than ever. How can financial devolution be designed to better address local challenges, what should we specifically be calling on Government for? What is potentially in our own hands locally, how can we trial new approaches that will provide further evidence to call for wider financial reforms in public services?

The insights that will be presented, and the ensuing discussion, will feed into a series of policy papers on financing public services by the University of Birmingham’s City-REDI (City-Region Economic and Development Institute) which will inform the West Midlands Mayor’s Funding for Growth Commission as well as discussions with the West Midlands All-Party Parliamentary Group.

Speakers include:

Introduction and the regional context, Professor Simon Collinson, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Regional Economic Engagement, University of Birmingham

Devolution, austerity and delivering local public services, Andrew Carter, Chief Executive, Centre for Cities

Skills needed to innovate in the public sector, Catherine Mangan, Director of the Institute for Local Government Studies, University of Birmigham

Innovative financing: Future inspiration from the past, Professor John Bryson, City-REDI, University of Birmingham

Aligning national taxation with local economic needs, Professor Andy Lymer, Business School, University of Birmingham

The West Midlands Combined Authority’s perspective and its Funding for Growth Commission, Nick Taylor, Advisor to the Mayor of the West Midlands
