Birding Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee NWR with Kar DeGeiso
Overview
Join expert Audubon Everglades Field Trip Leader Kar DeGeiso for a guided exploration of two beautiful sections of the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge.
We’ll begin at the NWR Visitor Center, where we’ll venture onto the Cypress Swamp Boardwalk—a tranquil, shaded trail perfect for spotting woodland birds right behind the center.
Our next stop will be the Marsh Trail, an open habitat ideal for observing wading birds, waterbirds, and other wildlife.
This field trip is a wonderful chance to get outside, hone your birding skills with an experienced ornithologist, and enjoy the company of fellow nature enthusiasts.
What to Expect:
- A guided walk through two areas of the NWR
- A chance to see birds in a group
- An eBird trip list to which you can contribute (bring your account info!)
Logistics:
- Parking Lots: we will be using 2 parking lots. 1st - the visitor center 2. Marsh trail lot
- Meet Up: Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee NWR Visitor Center
- Restrooms: Available in/near the Visitor Center
- FEE- NWR fees apply

- Sunscreen
- Bug spray
- Hat
- Binoculars
- Camera
- Smart phone
Good to Know:
- Registration is required. No walk-ins.
- Be on time so we can make the most of our time in the field.
- Rain or shine, unless there's a hurricane.
- Photos may be taken for social media. Let us know if you'd rather not be included.
- Please cancel if you can’t make it—someone else may be waiting.
- Under 18? Bring an adult.
Accessibility Information:
- Parking: Some accessible parking available at the Visitor Center and Marsh Trail.
- Restrooms: Accessible restrooms located near and inside the Visitor Center.
- Benches: Benches are available for resting at the visitor center and at the start of the Marsh Trail.
- Trail Width: The boardwalk trail is typically 4 feet wide, the Marsh Trail ~8 feet wide.
- Surface: Boardwalk and flat grassy surface with some roots and bumps.
- Cell Phone Service: Cell service may be intermittent on the trail.

About Your Guide
Kar DeGeiso
Kar is an Animal/Plant Science major. She has been birding for over 40 years. Kar lived in Delaware and has birded a lot of the Eastern MidAtlantic states. She has volunteered in research projects with Red Knots, Saw-whet Owls and has worked for American Birding Association and Delaware Museum of Natural History where she was a docent and worked in the Bird Collections, making skins for the collections. Kar moved down to Florida, permanently 4 years ago. An avid birder and hiker, she loves to hike the parks and see what she can find.
