Join us as we demo two techniques for creating 'biochar' and learn alternatives for pile burning green waste.

Introductions


Group introductions, review of methods covered today. Hot drinks and refreshments will be provided in a dry pavilion.

10:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Conservation burn demo


Discussion about how to construct pile for conservation burn. Burn pre-constructed conservation burn pile(s). Finish and quench piles by 12:30.

12:30 PM - 1:15 PM

Lunch


Lunch will be provided in dry pavilion. Dietary restrictions and allergies are requested in registration.

Biochar applications


Discussion of different types of biochar creation methods and equipment.

3:00 PM - 3:30 PM

End Day 1 and transport back to vehicles


Participants will be shuttled back to parking area. Those attending Day 2 will be given directions on where and when to arrive the next morning.

Day 2 - November 20

Introductions


Group introductions, recap Day 1 (as applicable), review Day 2 techniques to be demoed. Hot drinks and snacks will be available in a dry pavilion at the field site.

9:45 AM - 2:30 PM

Biochar kiln demonstration


Group will go through whole process of using biochar kiln. Loading, ignition, tending during burn, quench with water, and deconstruct kiln.

11:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Conservation burn demo (concurrent with kiln)


After the biochar kiln is at a full burn (and is left actively attended by staff), the group will discuss conservation burn uses.

12:30 PM

Lunch


Hot lunch will be provided in the field. Dietary restrictions and food allergies are requested during the online registration.

1:15 PM - 2:15 PM

Construct conservation burn pile


Group will construct conservation burn pile(s) and burn if time allows.

2:30 PM - 3:00 PM

Discussion of biochar uses/applications


After the biochar kiln is quenched and deconstructed there will be a group discussion of biochar uses and applications, guided by the needs of the workshop participants.

3:00 PM - 3:30 PM

End Day 2


Participants will be shuttled from the field site back to their vehicles.

About this event

WHO should come: Anyone managing woody debris piles or fuel reduction, including (but not limited to) foresters, small woodlot owners, forest restoration practitioners

Anyone intersted in the benefits and/or applications of biochar

While everyone is welcome to attend both days we will have a different focus each day.

November 19th (commercial scale foresters)

  • Demonstration of Tigercat Carbonizer by a local commercial operator
  • Burn pre-constructed conservation burn
  • Discuss uses in managing slash in commercial forestry and uses of biochar products in contaminant remediation

November 20th (small/private foresters)

  • Group will create biochar using a small flame capped kiln
  • Construct conservation burn pile
  • Discussion centered around uses of biochar in restoration, carbon sequestration and forest health


You can sign up for only one or both days depending on what you find applicable. Please make sure you sign up for the correct day(s) to make sure we have supplies for everyone.


LOCATION: The specific meeting place on the South Slough Reserve will be shared via email at a later date with registered participants.

Pre-registration is required - please register by COB 10/31/25

There will be a one-hour informational webinar on 11/10 (recorded); access link will be shared with registered participants.


For liability reasons, NO ONE under 18 years old will be able to participate, even if accompanied by a legal guardian.
