The Out(sider) Preservation Initiative: The Field Beyond Regulation and Lists

Dr. Andrea Roberts will discuss the expansion of The Texas Freedom Colonies Project into the Mellon-funded Outsider Preservation Initiative (OPI). OPI's mission is to build an infrastructure of regeneration & repair in historic Black settlements through the creation of a web portal, popular education, grantmaking, and convenings.

The initiative encourages us to rethink what constitutes valid preservation practice, which places are worthy of preservation, and who is considered a preservationist.

Who is this talk for?

Perfect for preservationists, community advocates, cultural workers, historians, and anyone interested in ethical community engagement and descendant-led preservation practices

About the Speaker

Dr. Andrea Roberts is an Associate Professor of Urban and Environmental Planning and director of the Center for Cultural Landscapes (CCL) at the University of Virginia. She’s the founder of The Texas Freedom Colonies Project Atlas & Study, a vehicle through which students, descendants, & volunteers have documented 533 Black settlements.
