Bhagavad Gita Book Club: Chapter 14-- The 3 GUNAS

Bhagavad Gita Book Club: Chapter 14-- The 3 GUNAS

By Dane Fliedner/VEDIC SATSANG ATX

Overview

If Consciousness is One, then how do we explain the multiplicity of being in the manifest universe? Krishna explains the Gunas or modes

This chapter is a deeper explanation of the nature of Prakriti, which translates roughly to nature. It is the elemental nature of the universe and is everything that is “Not-Self”. Prakriti is made up of 3 interwoven threads (ropes) of energies—sattwa (purity), rajas (passion) and tamas (inertia). Krishna gives us multiple examples of how these 3 factors can manifest in our lives and serves as a good gauge for us to self-examine which of these energies tends to dominate our nature and how we can work to transcend our limitations as a result. He also reminds us that it is very difficult to transcend these forces alone and that devotion is still required to break free of them completely to attain freedom from the wheel of reincarnation.

For those who may be attending for the first time, we are using the Easwaran 2nd edition of the Gita for the study group. Additionally, we have posted videos of the previous sessions on our Facebook Group page. Please sign up and can view the links here:
